Grand Canal offers players the typical “move around the board” experience, while in Pagoda Peak, players race to the top of a mountain to buy stars, which increase in price by 10 coins each time one is purchased.
Mario Party 7 boasts six different boards that each provide a unique spin on the classic gameplay (rather than just being the same experience over and over in a slightly different skin). And speaking of choice, you can even get eight friends together to play a Deluxe Cruise of minigame challenges. There are also five microphone minigames that can be turned on or off depending on your preference (choice is good!). Some require cooperation, others require skill, and some are based completely on chance, which means you can never truly be assured of your victory or defeat. Mario Party 7 has 88 minigames that are broken down into a good balance of 4-player, 1-vs-3, and 2-vs-2. Bowser makes everyone stay on their toes, and I, for one, thank him for it. This might sound frustrating (and it often is, trust me), but it ensures that no one ever gets so far ahead in the game that the outcome is predictable. He might also randomly switch the players’ stars, coins, and positions. Or he might forcefully sell them a momento and steal their coins. Depending on the board you’re playing, he may destroy bridges and hamper the players’ movement. Every five turns, Bowser appears to shake up the game.
Bowser TimeĪ new feature introduced by Mario Party 7 is Bowser Time. Because in the game of Mario Party 7, you win or you…I dunno, cry about it and start another game. Bowser spaces drag the unlucky player who landed there (and sometimes everyone else, too) into a hellish, fiery gauntlet from which few escape.Īll this ruthlessness over a few stars might sound horrible to you, and if that’s the case, allow me to direct you over to Super Mario Party, where even when something bad happens to you, it’s hardly of consequence. Duel spaces let you beat up a competitor and take their stuff. Some boards allow you to change the location or price of stars, helping you keep the prize just out of reach of your increasingly desperate foes. Players can seed the board with merciless traps that steal stars and coins from opponents. The ones like Mario Party 7, where your fortunes can change in the blink of an eye. Give me the brutal Mario Party games of yore. Here’s why… You can still screw each other overįollowing Mario Party 7, the series’ entries gradually transitioned to a more “everybody wins” mentality and (in my opinion) grew bland and stale. But 2006’s Mario Party 7 is the pinnacle.
